Formed in 2013 to develop renewable energy projects in Kenya, in line with Vision 2030.
Capital Power (K) Ltd is a Kenyan registered company formed in 2013 to undertake renewable energy projects in Kenya. Our vision: local solutions that cut energy costs on the national grid and deliver clean, green, affordable electricity.
In 2017 we were granted Geothermal Resources Licence No. 5/2017 of 10/08/2017, covering 153 km² of the Homa Hills area in Homabay County. We’ve since held stakeholder forums, completed preliminary studies and secured the approvals needed to move the project forward.
The resource area
The Homa Hills Geothermal Area is the only known geothermal system in western Kenya. It sits on the Homa Hills Tertiary volcanic centre, within the floor of the Nyanza rift near Homa Bay Town. Surface signs include hot springs, hot grounds and fumaroles.
Preliminary studies put the reservoir above 165°C across more than 12 km², an electricity potential of over 160 MWe. That makes it a medium-temperature resource suited to binary or conventional cycle generation.
Power, then heat.
Stabilise power in the lake region, open it to industry, and create jobs. Then put the leftover heat to work.

West of the
main rift.
Most of Kenya’s geothermal sits along the central Rift Valley, from Barrier Volcano to Olkaria. Homa Hills is the outlier: the only known system in western Kenya, close to Kisumu and Lake Victoria.
Kenya holds an estimated 7,000 to 10,000 MW of geothermal potential. Homa Hills brings a share of it to the lake region.
